Implementation of a new kind of Biohut® in la Ciotat: The Seawall Biohut®

Implementation of a new kind of Biohut® in la Ciotat: The Seawall Biohut®

In partnership with the French Water Agency, Ecocean has released a new type of artificial habitat that aims to improve rip-rap’s functions to support surrounding marine ecosystems.

The goal is to improve the survival of young fish seeking nursery areas along hardened coasts by re-introducing shelter and food on human structures (rip-rap, seawall…).  The special designed of the Seawall Biohut® allows an easy and rapid installation on modified shorelines.

This pilot research study includes 20 of those habitats installed early May (before the peak of larval colonization) on the seawalls off the coast in La Ciotat. The monitoring will begin this summer and aims to assess the ecological gain of the Seawall Biohut®.
