CAIPIM Small islands of the Mediterranean and Macaronesia

The project aims to strengthen scientific knowledge about the small Mediterranean islands and Macaronesia, as well as their vulnerability to climate change, in order to support more effective management.

This project aims, in particular, to assess the ecological role of the Small Islands of the Mediterranean and Macaronesia as biodiversity hotspots, and to contribute to the implementation of management and restoration measures. The goal is to strengthen scientific knowledge about these regions and to support more effective management in the face of climate change.

As part of this initiative, Ecocean is monitoring fish post-larvae using its CARE light sensor. Fishing gear is deployed on several islands, and the team assists local managers during the capture, identification, and data entry phases. This information feeds into a shared database that enables the analysis of post-larval recruitment dynamics across the Mediterranean basin. A training session on how to use this innovative technique was held in early 2025 in Monastir, bringing together all members of the CAIPIM network.
