To address the challenges of ecological restoration and public education at the site, Ecocean has developed an innovative ecological engineering solution that combines habitat restoration with educational outreach. Two floating plant-covered rafts, equipped with eight Biohut® nurseries, as well as an environmental education trail, have been installed to promote aquatic biodiversity and enable visitors to discover and understand the life around the canal.

Project impacts

The vegetated rafts are planted with local species suited to riverbanks, at a density of about fifteen plants per square meter. The vegetation grows gradually and naturally expands as seeds and plant fragments are carried in by water or birds.

Ecological monitoring helps assess which species benefit from these habitats and document changes in the environment, particularly through underwater photography. Regular maintenance operations include inspecting structures, maintaining vegetation, and checking anchors. These operations can be carried out by Ecocean or include training for the client’s staff.

To give the project an educational dimension, an environmental learning trail called Captain Game has been set up along the canal. Consisting of 10 stations featuring multiple-choice questions about local biodiversity and life along the Ourcq Canal, it raises public awareness in a fun and engaging way. Information panels have also been installed to present the project and its objectives.
