Extension of the marine renewable energy pier Brest, France

As part of the port development project, Ecocean was commissioned to support the expansion of the pier dedicated to marine renewable energy. The goal of this initiative was to integrate biodiversity-friendly solutions into the evolving port infrastructure through the installation of the Biohut®.

The expansion of the marine renewable energy pier has led to changes in existing marine habitats and disruption of the local ecosystem. To address these environmental challenges, Biohut® was installed as a proactive measure to restore and preserve marine biodiversity. The project was followed by two years of ecological monitoring, conducted in partnership with the local consulting firm IdraBio, to assess the effectiveness of the solutions implemented.

Installation carried out in collaboration with a local team of scuba divers, as underwater welding was required to set up the nurseries.

19 Quai- and Kelp-type Biohuts have been installed on the pier.

June 2023
An initial monitoring campaign was conducted one year after the Biohuts were installed, in partnership with the consulting firm IdraBio. The monitoring efforts revealed the development of juvenile fish as well as the colonization of the Biohuts by benthic fauna.

November 2024
Over a two-year period, four ecological surveys were conducted, in the summer and late fall. These surveys revealed seasonal patterns in the species present in the Biohuts, with very high numbers in the summer.
