Port of Bruxelles Bruxelles, France

The Brussels Commercial Port, committed to sustainable development and green spaces in the city, sought to install floating green platforms on the Villebroek Canal.

Partners and funders

  • Port de Bruxelles

Since 2022, Ecocean has been supporting this project through the gradual installation of floating plant-covered rafts, designed to recreate habitats that promote biodiversity in urban areas. A total of 12 modules have been deployed, covering an area of 450 m², notably near the Royal Yacht Club of Brussels. These structures host a wide variety of aquatic plants and incorporate Biohut® underwater habitats, helping to restore the site’s ecological functions.

Project impacts

  • 450of floating wetland
  • 12vegetated rafts
  • 45Biohut installed
  • 2days of awareness-raising

The floating wetlands are planted with local species adapted to freshwater environments, with an average of about 15 plants per square meter of raft. The vegetation grows gradually and naturally diversifies thanks to seeds and plant fragments carried by water or birds.

Ecological monitoring helps assess which species are benefiting from these new habitats and document changes in the environment, particularly through underwater observations and photography.

Regular maintenance ensures that structures remain in good condition, vegetation is properly maintained, and anchoring systems are inspected.

To help raise awareness of the project, informational signs have been installed near the rafts to explain the initiative and highlight the measures implemented for canal users and the public.
