Fish Hotel Kust Nord & West Wind Farm, Holland

"Fish Hotel" installations at electrical substations in the Holland Kust Nord & West wind farm

Partners and funders

  • TenneT

  • Eiffage Smulders

This project aims to enhance the habitat functions of the jacket (support structure) of the electrical substation located in the Hollandse Kust Noord & West wind farm in the North Sea. The goal is to transform industrial infrastructure into an ecological habitat for marine biodiversity by integrating Biohut® “FishHotel” modules, which are designed to encourage colonization by local species.

Project impacts

The project demonstrated the technical feasibility of integrating FishHotel into offshore electrical substations under demanding environmental and industrial conditions. The durability of the natural materials used in Biohut®, particularly oyster shells, was confirmed, even during pile driving operations.

Assessing the ecological benefits remains a major challenge, as biological monitoring at sea is difficult to carry out. The observations made so far, which are limited by the constraints of ROV-based monitoring, do not yet allow for a precise characterization of the biodiversity associated with "Fish Hotels." Nevertheless, the technical results obtained have led TenneT to incorporate these devices into its construction standards for future offshore electrical substations.
